Prevention for Citizen Protection in Crises

Following recent events and the ongoing war in the region, state services in Cyprus are reviewing measures to protect citizens. A key issue is the condition of shelters, which cover approximately 45% of the population. The Civil Defense is conducting an inspection and re-evaluation of shelters, with the possibility of some being abandoned and new ones sought. Citizens are urged to locate the nearest shelter and prepare an “emergency backpack” with essential items. A test message was also sent for precautionary self-protection measures, however, the early warning system needs improvements. It is pointed out that the issue of shelters should have been addressed seriously after the Turkish invasion of 1974, but remains an issue with deficiencies. The Civil Defense reacted immediately after the Akrotiri strike, but further improvements are needed in early warning and citizen protection mechanisms. Prevention and preparation are essential, as Cyprus is affected by the situation in the region and is close to the “theater of war”.
