President: Republic Approaching Electricity Interconnection as Geostrategic Project

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that the Republic of Cyprus is approaching the electricity interconnection with countries in the region as a project of geostrategic importance, acting on it rather than just talking about it. He made this statement after questions regarding the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the possibility that Cyprus's role in the IMEC corridor was discussed. The President Christodoulides emphasized that he is in daily contact with the Greek Prime Minister on this matter, and that there is an agreement on the obligations arising from the implementation of the project, as well as the need to update the relevant studies due to international interest. Responding to questions about possible preferences of the European Commission for the implementation of the project, the President stated that there is no such response and that the update of the studies will take into account all relevant issues. He confirmed that the study is in its final stages and that an announcement regarding its assignment is expected within the next 24 hours.
