President of Cyprus: European Integration Linked to End of Occupation

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, emphasized to the European Parliament that European integration is inextricably linked to the end of the occupation of Cyprus, the liberation of the occupied territories, and the reunification of the island, based on relevant UN resolutions for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation. He stressed that Cyprus is the EU member state that knows best the consequences of invasion, occupation, missing persons, and refugees. During the presentation of the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency in the Council of the EU, President Christodoulides also referred to issues such as migration, the Middle East, the Multiannual Financial Framework, Schengen, and EU enlargement. He expressed satisfaction with the appointment of a representative of the President of the Commission for the Cyprus issue, emphasizing that the EU has the tools to achieve a mutually beneficial situation. Regarding migration, the President mentioned the significant reduction in arrivals in Cyprus by 80% and the increase in returns by 60% in recent years. The Presidency will focus on the unity of member states and the full implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum. Concerning Schengen, President Christodoulides described the goal of Cyprus's inclusion as strategic, as it will enhance security and reaffirm the country's European orientation. He confirmed that Cyprus has completed all technical checks and is awaiting the final report from the Commission.
