President of Cyprus Announces Deportation of Foreign Nationals Convicted of Minor Crimes

The President of the Republic of Cyprus has announced measures to alleviate overcrowding in the Central Prisons, which currently house a total of 1,120 inmates, 53.5% of whom are foreign nationals. These measures include the voluntary deportation of foreign prisoners not convicted of serious crimes, as well as the review of parole cases for others. Furthermore, a plan for a radical restructuring of the Prisons is being promoted to address chronic problems such as overcrowding, crime, and administrative inefficiency. All foreign nationals convicted of minor crimes will be deported or return to their home countries and will be banned from re-entering Cyprus. This decision aims to significantly reduce the number of prisoners and restore the smooth functioning of the Prisons.
