President Expresses 'Cautiously Optimistic' After Meeting UN Secretary-General on Cyprus Issue

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated he is “cautiously optimistic” after his meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General, emphasizing the SG’s “clear political will” to restart talks on the Cyprus issue. President Christodoulides expressed hope for a positive response from the Turkish side, so that the SG’s intention can be translated into a substantial initiative. The President made the statements after the student parade in Nicosia for the national anniversary of March 25th, emphasizing the importance of the Greek revolution of 1821 and the lessons we must learn from it. He underlined that the revolution of 1821 was a liberal revolution that yielded results and paved the way for the freedom of other peoples. President Christodoulides linked the struggle for the liberation of Cyprus with the struggle of the Greeks for their independence, stating that “based on the lessons of the struggle, we continue our own effort for the liberation and reunification of our homeland.” The President’s statement comes at a critical time for the Cyprus issue, as talks remain deadlocked. The expression of cautious optimism suggests an attempt to maintain hope for a solution, despite the difficulties.
