President Christodoulides: The Goal is to Open Checkpoints That Serve Both Greek and Turkish Cypriots

President Christodoulides stated that the main goal for opening checkpoints is to serve both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. He expressed his readiness to open the crossing points agreed upon at the expanded Cyprus conference, as well as those that will facilitate the daily lives of all Cypriots. Referring to a proposal by the Mayor of Nicosia to open a checkpoint in Kaimakli, the President emphasized that it is not enough to open a checkpoint that only serves Turkish Cypriots. Instead, the checkpoints of Athienou, Aglantzia, or Kokkina should also be opened to serve Greek Cypriots. President Christodoulides mentioned that work has already been done to improve the checkpoint in Agios Dometios, with the addition of a third lane, and that the government is evaluating all proposals for new checkpoints, taking into account the need for mutual satisfaction of both communities. Furthermore, he clarified that the proposal for Kaimakli was proposed as an alternative to opening the checkpoint in Mia Milia. He emphasized the importance of a balanced approach so that the checkpoints facilitate the daily lives of both communities.
