Poverty Remains Stuck at 17% in Cyprus – Rising Social Inequalities

Poverty in Cyprus remains stable at 17.1% in recent years, affecting approximately 167,000 people, despite positive economic performance. The National Network Against Poverty expresses concern over the increase in "working poor," households struggling to meet basic needs despite employment. Poverty disproportionately affects women (18.7% versus 15.5% for men) and the elderly over 65 (33.2%). Particular emphasis is placed on the vulnerability of single-parent families and elderly women. Additionally, migrants and individuals living in institutions face challenges, with cases of extreme deprivation and food insecurity being common. Basic needs are often met with the help of communities and businesses. The high cost of living, despite the reduction in inflation, particularly burdens low and middle incomes, as well as young people, due to high prices for energy, fuel, food, and housing. The president of the network emphasizes that poverty has a "gender" and affects women more. To address the problem, the creation of a comprehensive national strategy, based on dialogue with society, is proposed, as well as the improvement of existing plans and the Minimum Guaranteed Income, to be more effective in accessing the most vulnerable groups.
