Possible Data Breach from Digital Platform - What About Users' Financial Details?

An incident of a possible data breach from the GigaVoucher platform of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy has raised concerns about users' financial details. According to cybersecurity expert Alexandros Kaniklidis, unauthorized access to data related to the platform, which was used to submit applications for internet subsidies, has been detected. Mr. Kaniklidis clarified that the incident appears to be related to the theft of a user's login credentials and not to the hacking of a state system, however investigations are ongoing. He also noted that there is no indication of a breach of the government network, as the system is hosted on a different network outside the government. Although bank details or card information have not been leaked, data such as name, address, and contact details may have been compromised, which can be used in phishing scams. The risk lies in the possibility that users may receive misleading messages or phone calls requesting confirmation of their details. Mr. Kaniklidis stressed that similar incidents are to be expected, as the security of systems depends on both technology and the human factor.
