The political world of Cyprus expresses its deep sorrow over the death of former President of the Republic, George Vassiliou, who passed away at the age of 94. President Christodoulides emphasized Vassiliou's crucial contribution to Cyprus's accession to the European Union, as well as his dedication to resolving the Cyprus issue and reuniting the country. The President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, stated that Vassiliou's contribution to shaping Cyprus's European perspective is part of modern political history. Stefanos Stefanou noted that Vassiliou's term as President transformed Cyprus, its economy, and its society. George Vassiliou served as President of the Republic of Cyprus from 1988 to 1993. During his tenure, he promoted policies for economic development, social progress, and the modernization of the state. He also founded the University of Cyprus, a significant step in the development of higher education. After the end of his presidency, Vassiliou was appointed head of the negotiating team for Cyprus's accession to the European Union, a project he successfully completed.
