Police Rift: Shift Changes Spark Outcry

The Chief of Police, Themistos Arnautis, is pushing for changes to the working hours of approximately 1,000 police officers working a 12X36 system, aiming to strengthen policing and the police presence on the streets. The proposal includes reducing the 12-hour shift to 11 hours, which would free up personnel for frontline duties. However, this proposal has sparked strong reactions from trade unions, who denounce it as a unilateral decision that undermines labor rights and leads to income losses. Mr. Arnautis says he is open to dialogue, but insists on the need for a more effective police force. The implementation of the measure is scheduled for January 1, 2026.
