Police Raid European Commission Over Property Sale Investigation

Belgian police raided the European Commission as part of an investigation into potential irregularities in the sale of properties. The searches took place in various offices of the Commission in Brussels, including the budget department. The investigation concerns the sale of EU properties that took place during the term of the previous commission, when Johannes Hahn was the budget commissioner. The investigation is being conducted by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) and concerns 23 buildings acquired by the Belgian state investment fund, SFPIM, for 900 million euros in 2024. The European Commission had stated that the sale was carried out through a tender process in accordance with EU regulations. However, the investigation suggests that there are suspicions of irregularities. The European Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed that it is conducting an evidence-gathering investigation, but is not providing further details in order not to jeopardize the investigation. The Olaf, the EU's anti-fraud authority, the Belgian federal police, the European Commission, SFPIM and Johannes Hahn have not commented on the case.
