The Cyprus Police have launched an ex officio investigation following the publication of serious allegations by British Channel4 regarding the exploitation and sexual harassment of workers in Ayia Napa. The report concerns the possible commission of criminal offenses in the free area of Ammochostos. According to the documentary, young British women working in Ayia Napa through a specific agency face appalling working and living conditions, as well as incidents of sexual harassment. A Channel4 journalist secretly filmed nightclub owners offering work in exchange for sexual favors, while low wages and threats are reported. The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Christos Zanettou, did not rule out the possibility of isolated incidents, but stressed that they do not reflect the overall picture of the area. Communication is expected with the Minister of Justice and the Chief of Police to identify illegal businesses and take measures. The Municipality will also proceed with the identification of unsuitable accommodation for seasonal workers.
