Police Chief on Working Hours: A Long-Standing Request from Members

The Chief of Police, Themistos Arnautis, appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs to discuss the alignment of the Police's working hours with those of the Public Service. He emphasized that the request for this alignment came from the Police members themselves and their trade union representatives, and was not a unilateral initiative. In 2019, the Cabinet decided to gradually reduce the weekly working hours to 37.5 hours, taking into account operational needs. The Parliament ratified this decision, but its implementation has been fragmented, creating inequalities between office staff and shift staff. The Chief stressed that the delay in implementing the regulation was due to omissions by his predecessors, despite its approval. The current effort aims to implement the regulation, focusing on strengthening operational readiness and staff well-being, as part of the modernization of the Police.
