POED Raises Concerns About Validity of PIRLS Research Results

POED expressed strong concerns about the validity of the results of the international PIRLS research, due to serious problems in the conduct of the research, and sent a letter to the Director of Primary Education of the Ministry of Education. The organization requests a meeting to discuss the issue and consider ways to promote its recommendations. POED states that for two decades, Cypriot students have participated in international research, but the data is not adequately utilized to improve the education system. It believes that research should be used for improvement interventions and not for communication purposes or comparisons between countries. The organization points out that there is selective use of data, which often wrongly targets teachers, while emphasizing that the responsibility for the weaknesses recorded lies with the competent authority and not with the teachers. In addition, it states that international research does not always reflect the specificities of the Cypriot education system. POED expresses particular concern about the lack of digital equipment and networking in schools, which puts Cypriot students at a disadvantage in digital research, such as PIRLS and TIMSS.
