Pioneering Artist Karagian, Who Broke Taboos, Remembered by EKATE President

Cypriot painter and writer Andreas Karagian passed away at the age of 83. Athena Antoniadou, President of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Cyprus (EKATE), describes him as a pioneering artist who broke taboos and had an 'aristocratic aura'. Karagian, who lived for many years in Berlin, depicted homosexual desire and the worship of the male body in his work, in a way that Ms. Antoniadou describes as 'more innocent' and 'more genuine' compared to today's era. Karagian's work includes sections such as the 'Sailors', reminiscent of Yannis Tsarouchis, and telephone booths, with depictions characterized by 'photographic realism'. He was an artist who 'broke taboos' in a Cyprus where homosexuality was criminalized, and he considered sexuality 'very important'. Ms. Antoniadou also mentions Karagian's photography exhibition at EKATE in 2023, where he presented the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany through his lens. Karagian was born in Nicosia in 1943 and studied Medicine, painting in London, and engraving in Stuttgart. Important milestones in his career were representing Cyprus at the Venice Biennale in 2001 and the Cairo Biennale in 2006. His work has been exhibited both in Cyprus and abroad, leaving a significant legacy in Cypriot art.
