Phone Tapping: Convergence Reached, but 38 MPs Still Needed – Attorney General Excluded from Process

After much effort, an agreement appears to have been reached on how the CYP will conduct phone tapping, bypassing the Court. The new formula provides for the CYP to inform the three-member Parliamentary Committee within 72 hours when it determines the need for monitoring for security reasons. It also proposes amending the legislation so that the chairman of the Committee is a former judge of a higher court. The bill will be put to a vote in the Plenary Session of the Parliament on April 2nd. The agreement was reached with the disagreement of AKEL MPs and some independent MPs. It is noted that the Attorney General has been excluded from the approval process for the wiretaps.
