Peru: At Least 25 Injured and Damage from 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake

An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck Peru, causing at least 25 injuries. The earthquake, felt in the Ancash region north of Lima, occurred offshore near the city of Chimbote. Of the injured, 12 are hospitalized and 13 have been discharged. In Chimbote, the General Hospital sustained damage, as did schools and homes. Videos circulating on social media show buildings with cracks and merchandise scattered in supermarkets. Authorities are assessing the damage and providing assistance to those affected. Peru is located in a highly seismic zone, known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. In 1970, a devastating earthquake in the Ancash region killed 67,000 people, making it one of the deadliest earthquakes of the 20th century.
