Persephone Voskou

The text presents a satire of Cypriot society and the political scene, through the narration of a series of absurd events taking place in Zalongo. The story focuses on the attempt of Giota, a hairdresser, to find her lost lover, Sotiris Thrasou, with the help of Saint Fanourios and a fanouropita (a traditional Cypriot cake). The whole process is full of exaggerations and ironies, with references to figures and programs of local government. Persephone Voskou, a former police sergeant and self-proclaimed poet, is presented as the first honored guest in the 'Golden Key of Zalongo' program, which provokes the reaction of those present. The text is a caustic critique of Cypriot reality, with emphasis on superficiality, indifference and lack of substantial content.
