Pericleous: Students Should Have a Voice in Shaping the Education System

The Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of the Child, Elena Pericleous, emphasized the importance of meaningful student participation in shaping the education system, addressing students and representatives of the Pan-Cypriot Coordinating Committee of Students (PSEM). Ms. Pericleous stressed that discussions about school cannot be held without the involvement of the students themselves, as genuine change requires their active contribution and voice in decision-making that affects them. The Commissioner emphasized that student participation must be substantive and not merely formal, requiring an active role in decision-making and not just presence or a vote. She explained that participation means being heard, being taken into account, and actually influencing what concerns them. Ms. Pericleous highlighted the need for a school that encourages dialogue, expression, questioning, and the ability of students to propose and co-create. At the same time, she recognized the role of PSEM as an institution of collective representation, which empowers the student voice. However, the Commissioner stressed that meaningful participation requires responsibility, documentation, and dialogue, even through disagreement, proposing the philosophy of “I disagree – but I listen. I claim – but I respect. I propose – but I cooperate.” Finally, she pledged to strengthen the voice of children in decision-making centers, emphasizing that change must be made with students, not for them.
