PASYDY Discusses Restoration of Free Healthcare for Public Employees

PASYDY is in discussions with the Parliamentary Committee on Finance and Budget regarding the restoration of free healthcare for active and retired public employees and their families. The union states that this right was unilaterally abolished by the Parliament and has made significant efforts to reinstate it. Pettros Savvidis, Senior Permanent Secretary of PASYDY, highlighted the inequalities caused by the abolition, leaving chronically ill, low-wage, and low-pension public employees without medical care. The abolition has created, according to PASYDY, a situation of 'two-speed workers'. Prior to the introduction of GESY, public employees had full free healthcare. After joining GESY, they pay contributions like all citizens, but lost the right to supplementary free care for services not covered by GESY. Committee members agreed that restoring the right is necessary to correct the distortion. The discussion will continue on an article-by-article basis, with the aim of passing the amended regulations by the Plenary of the Parliament as soon as possible.
