Pasiourtidis: Government to Clarify Intentions for the Future of the Solidarity Fund

AKEL MP Andreas Pasiourtidis is calling on the government to clarify its intentions regarding the future of the Solidarity Fund. Specifically, he asks for clarification on whether the President Christodoulides' initial statement about abolishing the Fund still stands, or whether the intention to continue it remains in effect. Mr. Pasiourtidis points out that there has been insufficient explanation to the Parliament regarding what the “evolution” of the fund means and what the Presidential proposal is. He also emphasizes that student welfare cannot be delegated to charitable organizations and that the difficulty students face in paying rent is a serious problem that requires state intervention. He proposes transferring the Fund to the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) with funding of 3 million euros annually to ensure transparency and accountability. AKEL has been calling for the abolition of the Fund and the publication of donors for two years. Two proposals are expected to be discussed in Parliament: the abolition of the Fund and the transfer of funds to the IKY (AKEL) and the continuation of its operation with enhanced control (DISY).
