Park Chan-wook to Head Cannes Film Festival Jury in 2026

South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook has been appointed president of the jury for the 79th Cannes Film Festival, taking place from May 12th to 23rd. Park is the first Korean and only the third Asian to hold the position, following Tetsurō Furukaki (Japan, 1962) and Wong Kar-wai (Hong Kong, 2006). The selection recognizes his inventiveness, visual mastery, and ability to portray the complexities of human characters. Park Chan-wook has already been honored at the Cannes Film Festival with four films: Oldboy (Grand Prix du Jury in 2004), Thirst (Jury Prize in 2009), The Handmaiden (2016), and Decision to Leave (Directing Prize in 2022). Taking on the presidency of the jury is a significant recognition of his career and contribution to cinema. In a statement, Park Chan-wook expressed his enthusiasm for the role, emphasizing the importance of cinema as a space for gathering and solidarity. He highlighted that gathering in a theater to watch a film, and then discussing it with others, is a moving experience, especially in an era of division and hatred. Park succeeds Juliette Binoche, who chaired the 2025 jury. The 79th Cannes Film Festival is expected to announce its Official Selection in mid-April. The appointment of Park Chan-wook marks a new era for the festival and is expected to attract significant interest from the film world.
