Paphos Mayor Alleges 'Golden Degrees' and Public Sector Promotion Schemes

The Mayor of Paphos, Phaedonas Phaedonos, has made serious allegations regarding the sale of degrees to students in Cyprus, particularly from African countries who are enrolled in online courses. He claims that universities have thousands of students who are essentially buying their degrees. Furthermore, he accuses students registered at universities in Nicosia of simultaneously working in unskilled jobs in Paphos, while others are purchasing master's degrees to advance in the Public Service. Mr. Phaedonos claims to have had telephone conversations with the Rectors of the University of Cyprus (Tasos Christofides) and Frederick (Giorgos Demosthenous), who agreed with his allegations but called on him to submit evidence to the relevant authorities. The Mayor emphasizes the need for a collective approach to the problem and urges the Rectors to take action.
