Panagiotou: Ministry's Problems are Long-Standing - Fair Criticism Accepted

The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, referred to the foot-and-mouth disease crisis, emphasizing that the Ministry's problems are long-standing and due to limited financial and administrative resources. Ms. Panagiotou stated that the government is tackling the crisis by mobilizing 16 services and 500 officials, while support measures for livestock farmers have been taken. She admitted that criticism is legitimate, as long as it is documented, but stressed that the country is facing a "veterinary crisis" that is being attempted to be politicized. The Minister avoided assessing the effectiveness of the measures, prioritizing the containment of the disease, according to experts' instructions. She also referred to the activation of procedures since December, after the appearance of a case in the occupied territories, and the emphasis on biosecurity measures.
