Palmas: If Every Incident Led to Resignation, No Minister Would Remain

Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas referred to the recent meeting of the European Council of Defense Ministers, where the utilization of the SEIB regulation to strengthen the European defense industry was discussed. Cyprus, like Greece, has been approved to participate in this framework, with the possibility of borrowing funds on favorable terms to strengthen its defense. However, the raising of funds will be done in coordination with the Ministry of Finance to ensure fiscal balance. Mr. Palmas emphasized that European defense had been degraded for years, but the Russian invasion of Ukraine led to a re-examination of strategy and the need to strengthen defense sufficiency. For Cyprus, an amount of 1.18 billion euros has been approved, which will be allocated to defense projects, such as ammunition and heavy weapons systems. Cyprus prefers collaborations with European countries, mainly with France, Greece and others, for the supply of European-made weapons systems. At the same time, there is the possibility of participation of the Cypriot defense industry in specific production sectors, although it does not have a heavy industry for the construction of large weapons systems. The Minister of Defense noted that if every incident required a resignation, no minister would remain, implying the need for realism and management of the consequences of decisions.
