Outdated Siren System in Cyprus - Modernization Underway, New SMS Alerts Coming Soon

The Commander of Civil Defence announced that the tender process for a new siren system is in its final stages, aiming to replace the old and ineffective existing system. She also acknowledged that the recent test SMS alert campaign faced issues, with many citizens not receiving the messages or receiving them with delays. However, she stressed that this is a temporary measure implemented in collaboration with telecommunications providers until the new system is completed. Another test message is expected in the coming days, with the full operation of the new system anticipated in early June. Regarding shelters, the Commander clarified that they are provided on a voluntary basis by private individuals, who are responsible for their cleanliness and readiness within 24 hours of receiving a notification from Civil Defence. Most shelters have basic facilities, such as water and toilets, while mobile toilets will be provided for those that do not. A concern for Civil Defence is the accommodation of pets in shelters, as the existing ones are not designed for this purpose. The creation of special areas for pet accommodation in the future is being considered. It is noted that shelters cover 45% of the population of Cyprus, and the assistance of community leaders will be requested to identify additional suitable spaces. Citizens can find information on the location of the nearest shelter through the Save cy application. Civil Defence continues to work to improve the readiness and effectiveness of the warning and population protection system.
