Outcry in Parliament: Elderly Parents Forced to Beg for Funding for Disability Day Centers

The parliamentary Labor Committee discussed the disability bill, with strong complaints from the Pan-Cypriot Organization of Associations of Parents of Children with Special Needs. The president of the organization, Christos Augustinos, expressed deep concern about the future of day centers for people with disabilities, which are at risk of closing due to lack of funding. He emphasized that families are forced to cover the needs of the centers with fundraising, while elderly parents care for their children with disabilities, as there are no adequate support services. Mr. Augustinos accused the government of not participating in the consultation on the bill and that the "big picture" presented by the Deputy Minister leaves people with disabilities behind from birth. He highlighted the need for early childhood intervention, therapists and educators, as well as support for day centers, which are essential for the employment of parents and the provision of services. Furthermore, Mr. Augustinos stated that the new legislation does not take into account the needs of people with visual impairments and does not provide appropriate educational support. He expressed his disappointment that the Deputy Minister insisted on discussing the bill article by article, excluding the organization's basic demands. The organization is calling for immediate solutions to support day centers and provide services for people with disabilities. He stressed that families and people in day centers depend on the decisions of MPs and that the repeal of other legislation to promote the new legislation could be applied here.
