Outcry in Kourion Municipality over Kourium Central Park and Land Expropriations

The Kourion Municipality is facing strong opposition due to its plan to create the “Kourium Central Park,” a nearly 2 million square meter park on agricultural land between the districts of Ypsonas, Trachoni, and Kolossi. The project, with a 30-year implementation horizon starting in 2026, aims to provide flood protection for the municipality and allow for the expansion of residential areas. Land expropriations are estimated at 65,000 square meters per year. Mayor Pantelis Georgiou emphasized that the park will include green spaces, sports and cultural facilities, recreation areas, bike paths, artificial lakes, and a large square for concerts. He highlighted the need for expropriations, stating that they will be based on current value and without changing zoning regulations. However, this plan has sparked strong reactions from landowners, who are protesting the size of the project. After a meeting with the mayor, those affected formed a committee to continue communication with the authorities. Furthermore, some municipal councilors are questioning what exactly has been approved, clarifying that they have approved the strategic plan but not the complete project study. The discussion is expected to continue as the project has significant implications for the area.
