Organized Crime: Arrests Should Not Be Mere Show of Force

Following strong criticism and public pressure, the Cyprus Police proceeded with the arrests of individuals allegedly involved in organized crime in Larnaca. Two operations led to the arrest of ten people, Cypriots and foreigners, on charges related to the recent violent incidents and attempted murders. Among those arrested are two well-known businessmen, one of whom was the target of an attempted murder last July, and individuals allegedly acting as unlicensed security guards. The arrests were made as part of an investigation into obstruction of justice and conspiracy, as the suspects are alleged to have contacted the owner of the car rental company that was attacked and from which protection money was demanded. A large sum of money and bank checks were found in the office of one of the suspects, leading to an investigation into the offense of illegal possession of property. Meanwhile, six people remain in custody for the shootings that occurred during the attack on the car rental company, five foreigners and one Cypriot believed to be the core leader of the group. Police are investigating whether there is a connection between the two groups and the recent events. There are concerns that the arrests may be merely a show of force to appease public opinion, and the hope is that they will lead to a substantial blow to the networks of organized crime and reveal the full extent of their activities. The case is ongoing and further developments are expected.
