Occupied Territories: Vehicles Crossing from Free Areas are Disinfected

Disinfection of vehicles crossing from the free areas into the occupied territories has begun, as part of measures to combat foot-and-mouth disease. The “Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources” Hussein Chavush inspected the measures at the Pergamos and Strovolos crossing points. According to reports, the first case was detected in the occupied territories and the owner of the infected animal had contact with the free areas. The Turkish Cypriot side claims to have been informed of the presence of the virus in the free areas on February 20 and that the delayed recognition contributed to the spread of the disease. The Republic of Cyprus has been requested to supply 20,000 doses of vaccine, of which 10,000 have already been sent and the remaining are expected to be dispatched. Mr. Chavush stressed the need to vaccinate animals due to the contagiousness of the virus.
