Non-Prescription Drugs of the GESY Now Available at Private Pharmacies – Ending Patient Wait Times

As of today, patients receiving non-prescription drugs through the General Health System (GESY) will be able to obtain them from private pharmacies, instead of being forced to go to hospital pharmacies. This implementation is gradual and begins with 8 specific drugs, such as Pyridoxine and Calcium Acetate. The Health Insurance Organization (HIO) has informed doctors and pharmacies about the new process. Doctors may need to issue new prescriptions for these drugs. The distribution of the drugs to private pharmacies will be done through a distribution company. For new prescriptions, execution will be done exclusively by private pharmacies. For existing prescriptions, there is a transitional period where they can be executed either at private or hospital pharmacies, depending on availability. This change is expected to reduce patient inconvenience and improve access to medication. The HIO announced that more non-prescription drugs will follow in the near future.
