No New Foot-and-Mouth Disease Cases in Cyprus - Culling and Vaccinations Continue

The situation regarding foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus is considered positive, with no new cases reported. Veterinary services continue sampling and tracing on a pan-Cypriot basis. The second dose of vaccine has begun for cattle and sheep, while the first dose has been completed in a large percentage of animals (98% cattle, 65% sheep). The culling of animals in small units is ongoing, aiming for completion within the day, while in other areas it has already been completed. The number of culled animals has reached 20,000 sheep and goats and 1,200 cattle, with an expectation of further increase. Despite recent reactions, public cooperation is satisfactory and services are trying to manage the situation calmly. Cyprus has a legal obligation to record the extent of the problem in order to receive assistance from the European Union. A resumption of checks in areas with reactions is expected over the weekend or from Monday.
