No Crematorium a Decade After Legalization of Cremation

Despite the legalization of cremation in Cyprus a decade ago, the country still does not have a crematorium. This forces hundreds of families each year to turn to countries such as Greece, Austria, and Bulgaria to fulfill the last wishes of their loved ones. The first crematorium, licensed for the area of Agia Varvara in Paphos, has been delayed again due to changes in the initial plans. Work is expected to begin in early February 2026, with the first cremation taking place in 2027. There is interest in cremation, mainly from foreign residents, while the lack of burial space in cities such as Larnaca and Paphos is expected to increase demand for alternative solutions. The cost of cremation abroad ranges from €4,500 to €5,000.
