Nightmare of 2001 Awakens for Mouflon

The veterinary crisis of foot-and-mouth disease, which started in Larnaca and is spreading towards Nicosia, has put the competent authorities in Cyprus on alert. The Mouflon Management Committee convened urgently to take preventive measures, given the risk of transmission of the disease to mouflon, especially due to grazing with goats and sheep along the green line. The main measure decided is the ban on free grazing of goats on the northern and southern outskirts of the Paphos Forest, with the message being communicated through the United Nations to the T/C shepherds. Concern is high, as the disease has already 'broken the barrier' of the province of Larnaca. In the past, in 2001-2003, mouflon had been affected by the Infectious Keratoconjunctivitis disease, which caused blindness and death in about 25% of their population. Reproductive activity had decreased by 35% in 2003, recovering in 2004. The Game and Fauna Service has taken drastic measures, such as the ban on hunting and training of hunting dogs in infected areas, as well as the order of special weapons for remote vaccination of mouflon. Although no impact from foot-and-mouth disease has been recorded to date, vigilance remains high.
