Nicolas Sarkozy: Appeal Trial Begins Over Funding from Gaddafi – Will Be Tried on Four Charges

Nicolas Sarkozy will be tried in appeal for the illegal funding of his election campaign by Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in Libya. Last year, he was convicted of criminal conspiracy and sentenced to five years in prison, but was released pending his appeal. The trial will focus on charges of criminal conspiracy, corruption, misuse of public Libyan funds, and illegal campaign financing. According to the prosecution, Sarkozy had entered into an agreement with Gaddafi in 2005 to receive funding for his 2007 presidential campaign in exchange for support for Libya. If convicted, Sarkozy faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
