Nicholas Emiliou Elected Judge of the ECHR

Nicholas Emiliou has been elected a Judge to the European Court of Human Rights by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, representing Cyprus. His term will be nine years, commencing within three months. The election followed the procedure where the PACE selects from three candidates proposed by each member state that has ratified the European Convention on Human Rights. Mr. Emiliou possesses extensive academic and professional experience in the field of law. He studied Law at the University of Athens and continued with postgraduate studies at the London School of Economics and a doctorate at University College London. His professional career includes significant positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, such as Plenipotentiary Minister, Deputy Permanent Representative to the European Union, and Ambassador to Ireland. He also served as the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the Council of Europe and the European Union, as well as the Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Prior to his election to the ECHR, Mr. Emiliou was Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union since October 2021. His extensive experience in international organizations and European law makes him well-suited for the position of Judge at the ECHR.
