New Foot-and-Mouth Disease Case in Goat and Sheep Unit in Geri

A new case of foot-and-mouth disease has been detected in a goat and sheep unit in the Geri area, according to laboratory results. A total of 725 animals have been infected in 45 units. The Veterinary Services continue culling animals in Livadia, with the number of goats and sheep and cattle culled reaching 22,600 and 1,500 respectively. Vaccination has reached 98% of the cattle population and 72% of the goat and sheep population, while the second booster dose of the vaccine is underway. The Veterinary Services have received positive assessments from EUVET experts regarding the crisis management, however, they are facing strong pressure from agricultural and political groups, which negatively affect their work and contribute to the spread of the virus. Despite the difficulties, the Veterinary Services and the Ministry of Agriculture have implemented the recommendations of the experts and are implementing all the prescribed measures. Epidemiological investigations, tracing and sampling continue, while information is being provided to the livestock sector and the process of paying the first relief package has begun.
