New Foot-and-Mouth Disease Case in Dromolaxia – Infected Units Reach 46

A new case of foot-and-mouth disease has been confirmed in Dromolaxia, bringing the total number of infected units to 46, of which 43 are in the province of Larnaca and 3 in Nicosia. So far, approximately 23,000 sheep and goats and 1,712 cattle have died, with deaths continuing. Around 4,000 sheep and goats and 30 cattle are expected to be culled, with the number potentially increasing depending on the detection of young animals and births in the units. 98% of cattle and 72% of sheep and goats have been vaccinated, while the second vaccination is underway. Sampling, tracing and laboratory tests continue intensively throughout Cyprus, with new results expected soon. A suspected unit in Lakatamia proved negative, while another case remains under investigation. The transmission of the virus is mainly mechanical, through people and objects (clothing, shoes, vehicles, feed), and not airborne. There is concern about the spread through movements, as in the case of Dali, where infection was detected after the purchase of animals from an infected unit. The area of Athienou remains clean due to strict restrictive measures.
