New Foot-and-Mouth Disease Case in Dromolaxia – 46 Affected Units

A new case of foot-and-mouth disease was detected in Dromolaxia, within the already infected zone, bringing the total number of affected units to 46. 43 of these are located in the province of Larnaca and 3 in Nicosia. So far, approximately 23,000 sheep and goats and 1,712 cattle have died, with deaths continuing. About 4,000 sheep and goats and 30 cattle are expected to be culled soon. The Veterinary Services announced that 98% of the cattle population and 72% of the sheep and goat population have been vaccinated, while the second vaccination is progressing rapidly, with a rate of 23% for cattle and 2.6% for sheep and goats. At the same time, sampling, tracing and laboratory tests continue throughout the country. It is noted that airborne transmission is not the main way the virus is transmitted, but mechanical, through people and objects such as clothes, shoes, vehicles and feed. The spokesperson of the Veterinary Services expressed concern about the risk of spreading the virus through movements. A suspected unit in Lakatamia proved negative, while another case remains under investigation. The area of Athienou remains clean, thanks to the strict restrictive measures that have been implemented.
