New Emergency Package for Water Supply - Cabinet Approves €31 Million

The Cypriot Cabinet has approved a new emergency package of measures to address the water crisis, amounting to €31 million. The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, stated that inflows into the dams are minimal, only two million cubic meters. The total cost of projects to address the problem is expected to exceed €200 million. The government's goal is to have nine new desalination units operational by the end of 2026. Two units have already been constructed, with another two expected to be completed next month and in March, respectively. The government aims to increase the production of potable water to meet the country's needs. To achieve this goal, the government is calling on citizens to reduce water consumption by 10%, or two minutes less of running water per day. In addition, farmers have been informed of a 30% reduction in the amount of water they will receive compared to last year. The government is taking measures to ensure the sustainable management of water resources.
