New Decree Allows Employment of Foreign Students in Cyprus

A new decree issued by the Minister of Labour of Cyprus, Marinos Mousiouttas, allows the employment of foreign students from third countries, under specific conditions. Students must have completed their first academic semester and be enrolled in the second, while a certificate of studies, a study schedule, an employment contract approved by the Department of Labour, and a residence permit are required. Employment is limited to specific sectors such as trade, healthcare, household activities, manufacturing, agriculture, service provision, the food sector, and the hotel industry, with specific professions in each sector. The OEB calls on businesses to comply with the decree, while SEK proposes a comprehensive regulation of the issue of foreign workers. This decree represents an effort to address the labor shortage in Cyprus.
