Municipalities are expressing strong opposition to the government's intention to impose a landfill fee, warning that the cost will inevitably be passed on to citizens. During a meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture, the Union of Municipalities accused the government of failing to address infrastructure problems and seeking to impose a fee that will burden citizens. Mayor of Amathous, Kyriakos Xydias, stated that the Ministry manages the waste unit in Pentakomo, where 80% of waste is buried, while it should have ensured comprehensive management to bury only 20%. The Union of Municipalities states that it does not consent to the imposition of the fee and warns that it will react strongly. They argue that the failures of the Ministry should not be imposed on the Municipalities and citizens. Mr. Xydias emphasized that the imposition of the fee will lead to an increase in the cost of waste management and will burden households. The President of the Union of Municipalities, Andreas Vyras, stated that the Municipalities cannot afford additional taxes and that the imposition of the fee will create serious financial problems. He called on the state to take responsibility and inform citizens about the consequences of its plans.
