Munich Conference: Rubio's Hand of Friendship, but a Rift in US-Europe Relations

The Munich Security Conference highlighted a shift in transatlantic relations, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio attempting to reassure European leaders. Rubio acknowledged the “unbreakable bond” between the US and the EU, but reiterated the Trump administration's positions on European energy policy and immigration. Although Rubio's speech was milder than the criticism from Vice President JD Vance, it maintained the same line, condemning European energy policies and warning of the dangers of mass migration. This caused concern in Europe, which feels that relations with the US have changed, although they have not been completely broken. European officials acknowledge that the US administration is the best they could expect, but emphasize that trust has been damaged. The European Commission, through Ursula von der Leyen, stressed that Europe is facing new challenges to its identity and democratic foundations. The absence of Rubio from the meeting with European leaders on Ukraine was justified by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, with the fact that the US has global obligations. The Munich Conference confirmed that US-Europe relations have changed and that a return to the previous situation is difficult.
