Mobile Phone Blockade and Infrastructure Projects Planned for Prisons

The Minister of Justice, Kostas Fytiris, has set a timeline for the implementation of a mobile phone jamming system in the Central Prisons, as well as a series of infrastructure improvement projects. The decision to jam mobile phones is being made due to their continued illegal use, which poses a serious security problem. The plan to expand the existing Prisons has been cancelled, as a suitable site has been found for the construction of a new correctional facility. Until the relocation, targeted interventions will be implemented to improve operations, security, and the living conditions of prisoners. The projects include the renovation of medical facilities, the creation of a new entrance for staff, the construction of a new clothing warehouse, the creation of a new medical facility in the Open Prisons, and the construction of a new laundry facility for prisoners. In addition, the procurement of an electronic monitoring system is underway. The goal is to expand the possibilities of conditional release, while fully ensuring public safety. The projects are expected to be completed within three to six months, with the Minister requesting continuous monitoring of their implementation.
