Measures Coming to Address Bus Driver Shortage – Transport Ministry Considers Lowering Age Limit for Professional License

The parliamentary Transport Committee examined the problems with the operation of Pame Express in Nicosia due to a lack of bus drivers. The Ministry of Transport informed that it is preparing measures to solve the problem, including the possible reduction of the age limit for obtaining a professional bus driver's license and the completion of training hours. The initial decision to suspend the program has been postponed, with the company continuing the service as a sign of goodwill. The Director of Public Passenger Transport, Andreas Nikiforou, stated that the driver shortage is a pan-European problem, but the Ministry cannot ignore the situation. Cyprus Public Transport (CPT) is responsible for finding drivers, but the Ministry is considering solutions to help. Pame Express serves 500-600 people daily and made 100,000 trips in 2025. The financial director of CPT, Tryfonas Chatzichristoforou, stated that the company is willing to maintain the service, but needs a comprehensive proposal from the Ministry. Maintaining Pame Express by reducing other routes is not a sustainable solution. The initial decision to suspend was due to the inability to cover 80 routes with only 7 drivers. The company apologized for the inconvenience to passengers and committed to working with the Ministry to find long-term solutions. The continuation of the service, despite the shortages, was accepted after an invitation from the Ministry of Transport for a high-priority meeting.
