Mayor of Lefkara Threatens to "Take the Law into His Own Hands" Over T/C Properties

The Mayor of Lefkara, Sofoklis Sofokleous, has expressed his intention to personally take action to resolve the issue of Turkish Cypriot properties in the area, even if it means bypassing legal procedures. During a discussion at the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees, he accused the state of mismanagement and indifference, pointing out that many properties are collapsing and being used for illegal activities. The Mayor denounced cases where non-entitled individuals were demanding money from families to grant them housing, while emphasizing that he has repeatedly sent letters to the Ministry of Interior without receiving a response. He revealed that he has already taken a similar action, opening a house and changing the locks to accommodate a pregnant woman. Elena Karekla, a representative of the Turkish Cypriot Property Custodian, stated that procedures have been initiated to resolve the issue, with the aim of publishing available properties in April. However, the Mayor of Lefkara insisted that if there is no cooperation, he will take all necessary measures, even if it means violating the law.
