Marinos Kartikkis: 'Cypriot Cinema Has Come of Age'

Cypriot director Marinos Kartikkis presents his new film, “Deviation,” which is a microcosm of modern Cypriot society and focuses on its pathologies. Kartikkis explores the ethical dilemmas of everyday characters, aiming to create a film with which the audience can identify. The inspiration for the script came from a news story about a police officer who stole jewelry from the dead. The director emphasizes the need to highlight social realities through art, without didacticism. He also points out the changes that have occurred in cinema in recent years, such as digitization and the change in the way films are viewed, while noting that state funding for Cypriot films remains low. The film was largely funded by the Deputy Ministry of Culture of Cyprus, which was crucial for its production.
