Makarios Hospital: Parents' Complaints Regarding Pediatric Oncology Ward Conditions

The Pan-Cypriot Association of Parents and Friends of the Pediatric Oncology Unit expresses strong concern over the conditions at Makarios Hospital due to renovation works. While acknowledging the need for renovations, the Association emphasizes the need for a new, modern Mother and Child Hospital. Parents are protesting the lack of adequate protection measures, resulting in deteriorating conditions for hospitalized children, their parents, and staff. Specifically, issues such as continuous noise pollution, dust and debris falling from false ceilings – particularly dangerous for immunocompromised children – water leaks, and water supply interruptions leading to the flow of dirty water are reported. The Association stresses that the safety and protection of children are non-negotiable. The Association calls for an immediate reassessment of protection measures, an update of the risk management plan, and daily monitoring of the work. It emphasizes the need for a calm, clean, and safe environment for children fighting a difficult battle for their health. The Association states its determination to protect families "in every institutional and responsible way" and expresses its full support to parents facing these difficult conditions. It underlines the dignity and strength with which families face their trials, while insisting that the protection of children is paramount.
