Loss of Internationally Renowned Scientist Ioanna Kakoulli – Her Achievements in Monument Conservation

The scientific community of Cyprus is mourning the untimely death of Professor Ioanna Kakoulli, a scientist of international repute and a pioneer in the field of monument conservation and archaeometry. Kakoulli managed to uniquely combine technology, history, and the science of conservation, leaving behind a significant legacy of innovation. Kakoulli founded the Archaeological Materials Research Group and the Molecular and Nano-Archaeology Laboratory at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she developed international collaborations and published important research in leading scientific journals, such as Nature and the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Her research focused on the science of archaeological materials, forensic archaeology, the creation of new materials inspired by ancient technologies, and the sustainability of cultural heritage. In addition to her research, Kakoulli excelled in education, creating an innovative interdisciplinary doctoral program in Cultural Heritage Conservation at UCLA, which combined technical, scientific, and humanities disciplines. Through this program, UCLA became a global hub for the identification of looted antiquities and the protection of cultural heritage. Kakoulli mentored over 40 postgraduate students, many of whom now excel in universities, museums, and industry. Her contribution to the scientific community and the protection of cultural heritage will be timeless.
