London Considers Christodoulides' Call for Talks on British Bases in Cyprus

President Christodoulides has proposed negotiations on the future of British Bases in Cyprus, with the proposal for the establishment of a technical committee under consideration in London. The Cypriot Government, while not seeking immediate abolition of the Bases, considers them a long-term goal, pursuing a gradual and evolutionary process. In the first phase, the priority is coordination and institutionalized information on security issues, aiming to prevent the use of the Bases for military operations. Subsequently, issues of compensation and territorial matters, including legal aspects, will be examined. London, however, maintains a cautious stance, emphasizing the critical role of the Bases in regional security and announcing the deployment of additional defense capabilities to Cyprus.
